Lena was born in 1985 in the historic neighborhood of Hyde Park, Chicago, Illinois, into a large extended family bursting with God-given talents, style, and flair. As a young child, Lena's diagnosis of sickle cell disease (SCD) sent shockwaves through her family. Although she was born with the genetic illness known as sickle cell disease, she was not diagnosed until age 4. The Illinois Department of Health (IDOH) introduced mandatory newborn screening (NBS) for SCD in 1989. This program, which includes screening for sickle cell trait, is still in place today.
That same year, Lena was given her first pair of black patent leather kiddie heels; the rest is history. Lena developed her presence and poise after her parents invested in their only daughter, placing her in ballet, tap, dance, and modeling classes.
In 2023, Lena competed in and won Indianapolis’ own Miss Essence World Elite beauty pageant. Focused on building a platform of her own, in that same year, Lena reignited her love of modeling by walking for internationally known Indy duo Nikki Blaine Couture and stylish stylist Thierry Baptiste.
Since then, Lena has had the pleasure of walking in honor of Academy Award winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter, among other notables.

The Indiana Sickle Cell Consortium (ISCC) is comprised of Indiana healthcare providers and community-based organizations (CBOs) committed to improving the lives of individuals affected by sickle cell disease (SCD). Lena is currently serving in her fifth year as Co-chair of the ISCC’s Advocacy Committee.
